Youth Sports Coaches

Registration Process

1. All volunteer coach positions are registered during the registration window for that specific program. All volunteers are taken first come first serve.

2. To register as a volunteer coach, fill out the volunteer packet on this page for the program you are interested in during the program registration period and send it to Recreation Supervisor Lisa Hastedt at lhastedt@debary.org.

3. Once your packet is received, you will receive a link to complete your background screen form online.

4. When the background clears you will receive notification that you are set up as a volunteer. From there, the Program Supervisor will be in touch with more information on starting the upcoming program.

5. If you have a child in the program you are volunteering, please make sure to register your child before the program fills up.

Background Screens

All volunteers must be screened once annually in order to be an active volunteer in any of our programs. All volunteers are cleared through the National Center for Safety Initiatives at no expense to the volunteer. After registering to volunteer, the participant will receive a background screen link via email and must complete the screen at least two weeks prior to the program start date in order to be cleared on time. Volunteer background screening is governed by Florida state statute. Any offenses listed in the state statute will automatically disqualify a participant from volunteering. Any offenses not listed in the state statute are to the discretion of the City if they are to allow the participant to volunteer or not.

Youth Sports Policies and Code of Conduct

Volunteers, alongside City staff, are the face of the program to the participants. Due to this, our volunteers are held to the same standards, policies, and code of conduct as staff members. This includes, but not limited to, the volunteers actions within and outside the recreation program, commitment to the program, availability to attend all required dates, timeliness, and professionalism while participating. All volunteers are provided limited training alongside staff members and other resources to get started in the program. From there, it is the volunteers responsibility to ensure the high standards are being met and they put in the required work to successfully complete the program.

Youth Sports Coaching

The City of DeBary Youth Sports programs have been designated a Better Sports for Kids Quality Youth Sports Provider through the National Alliance of Youth Sports. To achieve this designation our programs had to meet, or go beyond, industry standards in our written policies and procedures, volunteer screening, coaches training, parent education, and accountability. Our goal is to promote physical, mental, and social health for better quality of life. We believe our programs will improve relations and better serve the youth in our community.

We take great pride in coordinating, administrating, and implementing high quality, well organized leagues and programs that go above and beyond expectations for the youth in Debary.

To get started, all Volunteer Youth Sports Coaches must attend mandatory pre-season meetings and trainings prior to starting. Prior to the season starting and as a part of the pre-season meetings, Volunteer Youth Sports Coaches must read, acknowledge, and adhere to the department Youth Sports Manual and Code of Conduct in order to participate in the program. The commitment, duties, and responsibilities of our Youth Sports Coaches are as follows:

  • Coach of male/female athletes between the ages of 6-14.
  • You will be considered a role model for young athletes assigned to your team; therefore sportsmanship, fair play, and full participation are mandatory.
  • Plan and supervise games, practices, and events.
  • Supervise assistant coaches, managers, or team parents.
  • Teach the young athlete the fundamentals of the sport.
  • Encourage the involvement of the parents in the sport.
  • Schedule and conduct parent and other necessary meetings.
  • Provide a safe and fun environment for the children.
  • Learn and follow all league rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Give each player equal playing time.
  • Attend all league functions and participate in league activities.

Youth Sports Coaching along with all of our volunteer opportunities can be extremely fulfilling and make a huge impact on the community and the children you are teaching and coaching.  Great volunteers are the backbone of all of our programs and we couldn't do it without you! Contact the Program Supervisor to get started today!
