City of DeBary partners with Sports 4 the Kids to provide scholarships

DeBary, Florida – The City of DeBary’s Parks and Recreation Department has partnered with Sports 4 Kids to provide scholarships for children from families in need for the City’s Youth Sports Programs. 

The scholarships, totaling approximately $2,000, will allow financially disadvantaged youth the opportunity to achieve and maintain educational goals and healthy lifestyles by providing financial assistance for the various youth sports programs the City offers.  The programs, which typically serve around 3000 youth annually, include soccer, flag football, and Babe Ruth baseball and softball, among others.  A list of all DeBary sports programs can be found at www.debaryrecreation.org.

To be eligible, the child must reside in Volusia County and be registered with their school’s meal benefits program for a free and reduced lunch.  The application is available at http://www.sports4thekids.org/information/ and must be submitted to Sports 4 Kids by February 15.  Once approved, funds will be sent directly to the team in honor of the athlete.  Due to the popularity of the DeBary programs, space is limited, with acceptance into a program on a first come first served basis until filled. To ensure a spot on a team, scholarships would have to be applied for and completed before the program fills. 

Jason Schaitz, the City’s Parks and Recreation Director stated: “Programs such as Sports 4 Kids level the playing field for low-income families. By partnering with this organization, the City can help all youth in our community gain the lifelong benefits that sports and physical activity provide.”
