Fort Florida Road has seen an increase in larger vehicle traffic since it was paved, and a tremendous increase recently with construction traffic. A number of complaints were called in pertaining to low hanging branches and line of site problems due to vegetation overgrowth. Resident's concerns were related to the larger vehicles and the need for those vehicles to hug the middle of the roadway thereby reducing the travel lane of oncoming traffic.
Work was done on Fort Florida to address vegetative growth both horizontally (brush) and vertically (tree branches). As the phased work progressed more areas of concern were addressed and the project expanded. This is due partly to the amount of vegetative growth along Ft. Florida and the fact that the Swamphouse 5K and Half-Marathon was rapidly approaching. It was deemed beneficial and more cost-effective to complete the trimming and remove the hazards for vehicles and pedestrians/runners. The work was completed at the cost of $1,500 for brush cutting and a total cost of $4,800 for tree trimming.
In an effort to keep fiscal transparency the amount of tree trimming exceeded the amount required by the charter for three (3) bids (purchases over $3,000 up to $8,000). The Ft. Florida tree trimming is over by $1,400. Line item funding is budgeted within the overall tree maintenance budget which does not incur any line item overage or budgetary hardships.
Recommended motion to fund the completed work with Council approval.
